Read, Read, Read

Helping our students learn the basics of reading is one of Longfellow's most important goals. We teach how to identify letters and sounds, put those letters into consonant-vowel-consonant patterns, build into multiple syllables, and teach students how to understand the words in text.

Reading storybooks with children is one of the most important activities for developing knowledge which helps them build for future success. Reading at home is a wonderful use of time. It helps build imagination, an understanding of the world, and strengthen relationships within families.

Longfellow has a wonderful library, as well as a lending library which was recently replaced. The Hastings Public Library has countless opportunities to explore!

Important Announcements

Lunch Time

Lunches at Longfellow are a balanced way for students to eat! We provide multiple lunch choices and a salad bar stocked with fresh vegetables and fruits.

If students bring their lunches from home, please send foods that are balanced, too. Proteins, fruits, vegetables, and a small treat is appropriate for dietary needs for growing bodies and minds. Please limit sugary sources of food as it can cause tummy and head aches.

Inclemental Weather

Snow and cold weather days are not uncommon in our area. If weather creates an unsafe environment for students to travel to school, Hastings Public Schools may choose to cancel classes for the day.

Hastings Public schools will send automated phone calls out to families about school cancellations. Cancellations will also be posted on social media, our local television, and local radio broadcasts.

Typically, the office will not be staffed during these days.

Field Trips and Concerts!

Hastings Public Schools has approved outings and field trips for the 2023-2024 school year. Students get wonderful opportunities to learn about our local history, explore science exhibits, and perform in concerts. The 3rd-5th grade concert will be on November 9th at 7:00pm.

In some cases, teachers may ask for assistance from parents. Parents are requested to fill out a background check and it is district policy that all adults finish through the process.

Watch Dogs

Watch Dogs will have a parent meeting on November 15th at 7:30am. Longfellow connects with families by asking fathers and other male role models to join us for part of a day. Watch Dogs patrol the school, help with small groups, and get to hang out with their student's classes. High fives are expected!

Spelling Challenge

The spelling challenge will begin at the start of November, but planning is underway! This is one of Longfellow's favorite events and we don't want anyone to miss out. Please contact Dani Schwinn in our PTO if you would like to help. More information will come out soon, but the following dates have been established:

  • November 1st, Spelling Challenge Kick-Off
    • Flyers will go home
    • Videos for the event will be played at school
  • November 15th, Pledge Packets Due
  • November 16th, Quiz Day!
  • November 28th, Pig Race Day!

Square 1 Art

Students create art projects and families can order creations on many different forms, such as magnets, cups, or pot holders. Art can be ordered at any time, but to receive items before Christmas, items must be ordered by November 30. Our PTO parents, Myste Ellerbee and Jenni Welsch, are helping organize our art! Thanks PTO for this unique opportunity to keep a piece of our children’s work.

Thanksgiving Lunch

Thanksgiving Lunch will be on Thursday, November 16th. The Longfellow PTO needs volunteers to help decorate the tables at 10:00 AM, then to help carry trays, clear tables and spread Thanksgiving cheer!

Help is appreciated for any, or all, of the meal time. We are usually finished by 1:00 PM. Please contact Steph Adam if you can help at steph.adam@hotmail.com.

Hastings Kiwanis Donation to 3rd Graders

Third grade students recieved dictionaries from Hastings Kiwanis. The dictionaries are for them to keep and use throughout their school career. Leaf Hunt

Kindergarten

In October, Kindergarten learns all about the changes we see in the Fall. We read the story We Are Going On A Leaf Hunt by Steve Metzger and then get to go on a leaf hunt of our own! We take the leaves from our hunt and create leaf rubbings, squirrel crafts, and learn about why leaves change color through different experiments.

Thank you, Earl May and Longfellow PTO!

Our Longfellow Art department would like to graciously thank Early May for the generous donation of hanging plants for our Art Room. Jackie Schmidt was very helpful in helping us choose some that would be perfect for making our room a cozy, organic working space. Thank you, Earl May!!

Our Longfellow Art students would like to graciously thank our PTO for purchasing a colorful Art rug for the Art room. We use it for reviewing colors, and other art concepts. We love our Longfellow PTO!

Additional Information

Every Wednesday students will be dismissed at 2:30 pm. Please make arrangements to have students picked up on time, as teachers will be participating in collaborative meetings.

Breakfast starts at 7:30 am. Students should enter the building through door number 7 (south side on playground). We still request that you fill out free and reduced lunch forms, as there are other benefits that families might experience by submitting this form. The form was mailed to families by the district office. If you need a new form, please call or stop by our office. Our phone number is 402-461-7584.

We ask that you bring your child to school on time. Every morning students line up at their “paws” on the playground. Staff members will begin morning supervision at 7:50 am. Please do not bring your students directly into the building.

Please provide a doctor’s note every time your child stays at home sick.

A student handbook is available online or can be printed. Parents may request a paper copy. It is important to review this handbook with your child, so he/she is aware of school policies. Parents and students will sign the acknowledgement receipt that was sent in the mail to every student. If we haven’t received a signed receipt, we will continue sending a form in your student’s Wednesday folder. Please take time to read the handbook and sign the receipt with your student and return it to school.

Teachers will communicate with parents via communication app Remind. Principal’s emails are sent to parents once a week. The school newsletter is sent once a month. Our website will also help you stay informed about important events and information at Longfellow Elementary and Hastings Public Schools.

The Hastings Public Schools app is also a wonderful way to keep track of the district’s events, esspecially with multiple children that may be in different buildings.

Parking is limited around Longfellow School. Please consider parking a block or two away and walk toward our building. We want to make sure that our children, staff, parents and community members feel safe at the drop off and pick up times. Please do not park in the parking lot of the dental office across from Longfellow School or in the parking lot of Mary Lanning Hospital.
