Attitude of Gratitude

The holiday season can be a blur of planning, busy work, and stress for many families. Reflecting on the year and what we are grateful for is critical to improving our health, social bonding, and stress relief. Creating an attitude of gratitude is a deliberate practice that might require a mindset shift. Cultivate daily opportunities to be grateful for something or someone in your life, surround yourself with positive people, and live in the present, thankful for what you have now instead of dreading the past or future. Start by writing three things a day or having a conversation with the family at dinner or bedtime. Perhaps a tiny step toward gratitude can help put all of us in higher spirits this season!

Important Announcements

Snow and the Playground

Who doesn't want to go play in the snow after Hastings gets a few inches? Our students often want to go and dive head first once they see it on the playground, but here's a couple of reminders so that kids can have the opportunity!

Step 1: Snow Boots. Wet socks all day feel miserable, and we ask that students wear them or they stay on the concrete (no snow, how sad).

Step 2: Snow Pants. Yes, they take forever to put on and take off, but wet pants are more miserable than wet socks!

Step 3: Gloves and Hats. Staying warm is good.

Inclemental Weather

Snow and cold weather days are not uncommon in our area. If weather creates an unsafe environment for students to travel to school, Hastings Public Schools may choose to cancel classes for the day.

Hastings Public schools will send automated phone calls out to families about school cancellations. Cancellations will also be posted on social media, our local television, and local radio broadcasts.

Typically, the office will not be staffed during these days.

The Longfellow Way

It is important that all members of our school community understand how to live “The Longfellow Way” at school. We teach our students to LEAP: Live with Integrity, Earn and Give Respect, Act Responsibly, and Practice Compassion. These are our four school rules. Students can receive L.E.A.P tickets for demonstrating respect, responsibility, compassion and integrity from all staff and are entered into a weekly drawing for a chance to visit the LEAP store. If students are chosen from the class drawing to go to the LEAP store, they can pick prizes or coupons to do an activity, like eat lunch with a teacher. They also receive a certificate. At the end of each month, 12 students are randomly chosen from all the LEAP tickets collected to be our Leaping Leopard Winners. These winners get to choose a prize from a special list of rewards.

LEAP tickets go home with students, so please praise your student when you notice these tickets in his or her backpack. Invite your child to tell you why he or she earned the LEAP ticket. This gives your child the opportunity to talk about how he or she is living “The Longfellow Way”.

Grandma, Laura!

Laura is one of Longfellow's treasures. She helps serve our Kindergarten and first-grade students through a servant's heart. She loves Longfellow and volunteers many hours to assist our students in many ways. Ms. Zigelstein and Ms. Kuehn are thankful for the many hours Laura has given to their students. Laura, thank you for what you do for us. We are grateful for your example of character for our students, all of us at Longfellow appreciate your kindness.

Additional Information

Every Wednesday students will be dismissed at 2:30 pm. Please make arrangements to have students picked up on time, as teachers will be participating in collaborative meetings.

Breakfast starts at 7:30 am. Students should enter the building through door number 7 (south side on playground). We still request that you fill out free and reduced lunch forms, as there are other benefits that families might experience by submitting this form. The form was mailed to families by the district office. If you need a new form, please call or stop by our office. Our phone number is 402-461-7584.

We ask that you bring your child to school on time. Every morning students line up at their “paws” on the playground. Staff members will begin morning supervision at 7:50 am. Please do not bring your students directly into the building.

Please provide a doctor’s note every time your child stays at home sick.

A student handbook is available online or can be printed. Parents may request a paper copy. It is important to review this handbook with your child, so he/she is aware of school policies. Parents and students will sign the acknowledgement receipt that was sent in the mail to every student. If we haven’t received a signed receipt, we will continue sending a form in your student’s Wednesday folder. Please take time to read the handbook and sign the receipt with your student and return it to school.

Teachers will communicate with parents via communication app Remind. Principal’s emails are sent to parents once a week. The school newsletter is sent once a month. Our website will also help you stay informed about important events and information at Longfellow Elementary and Hastings Public Schools.

The Hastings Public Schools app is also a wonderful way to keep track of the district’s events, esspecially with multiple children that may be in different buildings.

Parking is limited around Longfellow School. Please consider parking a block or two away and walk toward our building. We want to make sure that our children, staff, parents and community members feel safe at the drop off and pick up times. Please do not park in the parking lot of the dental office across from Longfellow School or in the parking lot of Mary Lanning Hospital.
